PD&A Expert Spotlight: Psychiatric Standard of Care Expert KyleeAnn Stevens, MD

KyleeAnn Stevens, MD, who is board certified in psychiatry and forensic psychiatry, is the Executive Medical Director for Behavioral Health for the Minnesota Department of Human Services. In this role, she is responsible for clinical care in hospitals (forensic and civil), treatment programs, and outpatient services, as well as oversight of the medical staff, peer review, and quality metrics such as restraint and seclusion and staff injuries. This makes her an ideal consulting and testifying expert for cases regarding inpatient standards of care and malpractice claims.

Dr. Stevens is an Adjunct Professor at the University of Minnesota and is a Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association.  She holds a black belt in Lean Six Sigma performance improvement.

Previously, Dr. Stevens worked as an attending psychiatrist at St. Elizabeths Hospital in Washington D.C. where she helped spearhead creation of a forensic consultation service to meet hospital needs for independent competency and criminal responsibility evaluations as well as report writing and testimony. She became the Director of Forensic Services at St. Elizabeths, where she was responsible for oversight of all forensic reports and testimony for courts in D.C. and federal courts for pre-and post-trial matters such as readiness for conditional discharge.

Dr. Stevens completed her medical training at the University of North Dakota School of Medicine and Health Sciences, and her residency and fellowship training in forensic psychiatry at Georgetown University.
